Before you start using the Vatsim network as a pilot or controller it is essential to have a proper understanding of rules & procedures governing your online activities.

Vatsim is used by pilots of all regions. Regional controllers must adhere to the standard operating procedures to avoid any misinterpretations or confusions.

Online operations always depend on close cooperation between pilot and controller. Keeping that in mind SRM training documents are prepared for the reference of both pilots and controllers, so both parties can understand the responsibilities of each other.

Technically there is no training requirement for pilots, before they can login for Vatsim flying. But Vatsim controllers must undergo specific minimum training program, before they are allowed to carry out online control duties.

New Vatsim controllers are joined as Observers, who should go through basic training documents. Their progress is shown in chart below.

NEW VATSIM MEMBER
  • Introduction to VATSIM operations, rules and procedures.
  • Refer VATWA policy relevant to Training Procedures and Rating Upgrades Procedures within VATWA Division.
  • SRM Induction training in Delivery & Ground positions.
  • S1 rating after theory and practical assessment.
S1 CONTROLLER – DEL/GND
  • Introduction to TOWER operations, rules and procedures.
  • SRM Induction training in TOWER position.
  • S2 rating after theory and practical assessment.
S2 CONTROLLER – TWR > GND/DEL
  • Introduction to ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE operations, rules and procedures.
  • SRM Induction training in ARR/DEP positions.
  • S3 rating after theory and practical assessment.
S3 CONTROLLER – APP/DEP > TWR > GND/DEL
  • Introduction to CENTRE operations, rules and procedures.
  • SRM Induction training in Center position.
  • C1 rating after theory and practical OTS/CPT assessment.

C1 CONTROLLER – CTR > APP/DEP > TWR > GND/DEL

C1 rating is for all Enroute CTR sectors; both radar and non-radar control services.
